Keeping Pets Safe and Healthy this Winter

* From my partners at katzenworld.co.uk

As the darker nights are drawing in and the days get colder, PDSA is offering advice to help keep our pets safe, happy and healthy over the coming winter months.

PDSA Vet Nurse, Nina Downing, said: “With reports of wet, stormy and freezing weather expected over the next few months, it’s important to remember that, despite their fur coats, pets can suffer from the cold just like we do. They can’t tell us how they are feeling, or if they’re suffering, so it’s up to us to make sure we provide the extra care they need during colder weather.”

To keep our much-loved four-legged friends cosy and content this winter, Nina has put together some top tips for pet owners.

Dogs and cats

  • Make sure they always have access to warmth and shelter – never leave them outside for long periods.
  • A suitable waterproof coat can help keep dogs dry, and especially good for pets that are very young or old, are sick, or have very thin fur.
  • Dogs will still need daily walks and cats may still want to go outside, but keep these excursions short and frequent, rather than longer periods outdoors. But don’t force pets to go outside if they don’t want to.
  • Never leave pets in cars, caravans or unheated conservatories, as temperatures can quickly plummet, risking hypothermia.
  • After a walk, towel-dry them straight away if they get wet. A hair-dryer on a low setting can be useful to dry off dogs with longer hair. To avoid burning your pets’ delicate skin it’s important not to hold it too close to their body.
  • Check pets’ paws regularly and clean any build-up of salt, grit or dirt from them, as this can be painful.
  • Wear a high visibility jacket yourself for walks on dark nights, and use a high-vis or LED collar and a hi-vis dog jacket to make walking near roads safer.
  • If you spot your pet shivering, bring them into the warmth straight away and call your vet. Hypothermia can develop quickly and can be fatal if not treated.

Dirk and the Neko Flies Dragonfly

Dirk loves fishing rod style toys. Visitors are always surprised how fast he runs when they see him chasing these toys 🙂

Up until now feather toys were his favourites, but there’s competition: Neko Flies insects. Dirk has a dragonfly but there’s a whole series! I’m sure he’d love all of them and swapping attachments is a great idea to keep your cat interested for longer. Definitely worth checking out a few of the others (though the spider is not for me…)

Kragonfly 1

I was initially a bit worried Dirk might not like this new toy. It is fairly small – though bigger than an actual insect 😉 – and doesn’t make much noise when you let it fly. Admittedly, our cats probably pick up on a sound it makes that we humans can’t hear.

I needn’t have worried. Like most cats Dirk loves chasing real flies or ladybugs (as well as digital ones on a tablet…).
Obviously when it you move the dragonfly the air moves and Dirk’s whiskers were alerted immediately!

The Neko Flies Dragonfly is delicate, but well-made. Dirk pounces it, bites it, drags it across the room and it still isn’t broken.
One of the things I love doing is incorporating Dirk’s climbing towers when we play with this toy. Fishing rod style / flying toys are perfect for this! Dirk runs after it, jumps up for it and now also climbs up to reach it. It’s fun for both of us 🙂

What better way to finish an insect hunting session than chilling with it in your hammock?

Dirk chasing yet another fake rodent

Dirk and I previously reviewed Frolicat’s Cheese toy which Dirk loves playing with. This time Dirk and I played with Frolicat’s Rolorat: a robotic rat.

This toy will appeal to cats that are triggered by chasing laser lights and cats that enjoy playing with moving toys will also like this. When you switch the rat on its eyes light up and the tail starts moving. Then the rat starts rolling around the room occasionally stopping to move the tail and flicker the light in its eyes.

Dirk was properly intrigued by this moving toy though he mainly stuck to observing it when it was switched on. He’s not keen on laser light toys so that didn’t trigger him to play with it. He kept a close eye on it though! As soon as I switch it off he starts playing with it.

I guess kittens will love chasing this toy around the room when it is switched on. More mature cats, like Dirk, might play with it more when it is off. Dirk quite likes kicking it, jumping on top of it from a hidden position and pouncing or biting the tail.

An unintended game that Dirk enjoys as well is when I hold the rat up by its tail – it has a pretty long tail – and swing it around or drag it across the floor. He’s always up for a game of chase!

Kitten owners: I definitely recommend this one! It will provide hours of entertainment for you and your kitty 🙂

Dirk and his 4Cats Cuddly Dolphin

4Cats has got yet another great cuddly toy filled with catnip. They really know what cats love!
This one is in the shape of a dolphin, so not only is it soft and cuddly it looks cute too 🙂

You’d think the effect of catnip wears off after repeated exposure or as your cat ages, but that is certainly not the case!
Every time I give Dirk a new catnip toy he’s super excited. This one was no exception. Dirk likes biting or pouncing it or rubbing his head all over the toy. He doesn’t kick it as much as some other toys, but I suspect that’s because this one is so soft it triggers a different type of behaviour.

The sweetest thing is that Dirk likes to toss the toy in my direction as if he wants us to play with it together 🙂
I say ‘as if’ because I’m under no illusion that he really only wants me to give it to him or make him chase it… He’s trained me quite well!!

So head over to the Katzenworld shop and get your cat a cute dolphin to sink their claws or teeth into!

Dirk’s Favourite Cuppa ;-)

The people at Freak Meowt must have somehow figured out that Dirk & I often “drink coffee together” (I drink the coffee of course and Dirk knows that’s the perfect time to sit in my lap). Dirk has also shown great interest in any types of coffee that come with a foam layer of milk on top and I must admit he sometimes gets to have a little of the foam… Yes, I spoil him 😉

Dirk’s new toy is based on a worldwide much loved drink: tea – just catnip please, no sugar or milk (although..…)

Catnip Tea hh

All right, so his new toy is not actually a drink – though that would be a great idea! – but a Catnip Tea Bag. I love the idea and the design, that really put a smile on my face 🙂

Dirk, fancy a cuppa?

The catnip “tea” is inside a fancy Tetrahedral shaped bag and attached to a string with a label. The string and  label are by no means superfluous: just try and grab hold of the tea bag again when your cat is playing with it! You’ll find the label extremely helpful.

Dirk is in catnip heaven with this toy. He loves cuddling and rolling around with it or chewing the piece of string. He’s not into sharing – anyone surprised? – so I have to really try my best to get hold of the label if I want to play with him. Tossing it around the living room for him to chase is fun too, but I really just enjoy watching Dirk go nuts.
